    Brothers and Friends of Alpha:

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. stands at a historic moment in America and Newark, New Jersey — today is a time of sadness and great opportunity, targeted pessimism and unbounded optimism, and eternal sadness and infinite possibility. Since 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha has lead the way for social change as evidenced by members such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and thousands of like-minded Alpha men. While hope and change for a new day started long before President Obama or Mayor Ras Baraka were elected, double standards remain concerning educational and financial opportunities in our communities. While the rising stock market, real estate development, and new technology bring more opportunities to Newark and beyond, many in our community are not prepared to participate in this current economic good fortune. As Newark Alphas, we share a passion for our nation and community and seek to uplift our city while providing more opportunities for all by supporting our youth as they strive to continue their education; recognize and support our community leaders; patronize local businesses and non-profits with our time and money; and partner with organizations who share common goals.

Alpha Alpha Lambda, also known as the Newark Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is in a unique position. We have an opportunity to take another significant leap forward and expand the Fraternity’s impact in Newark starting today. Our community is in need and we are ready to serve. To achieve our goal, we are embarking on the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of our chapter. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by 2019—half will strengthen our endowment and half will provide support for National Programs and Initiatives.

Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter, Alpha Alpha Lambda Scholarship and Educational Fund, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. National Programs and Initiatives include:

Go to High School, Go to College: The "Go-To-High-School, Go-To-College" program, established in 1920, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement.

Project Alpha: Project Alpha is a collaborative effort between the March of Dimes Foundation and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program was developed to increase the knowledge of the African-American male of the consequences of teenage pregnancy from the male perspective.

A Voteless People is a Hopeless People: "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930's when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 80 years.

Brother’s Keeper: Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating for and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. brothers, their spouses, and widows who are retired, are elders, have disabilities and are ailing.

College Life to Corporate Life: The College Life to Corporate Life Initiative (C2C) was created to develop the human resources of Alpha Phi Alpha and cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners.

Alpha Alpha Lambda Scholarship & Educational Fund, Inc.

Alpha Alpha Lambda Scholarship and Educational Fund, Inc. is a non-profit 501c (3) corporation founded by the brothers of Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the fund’s main purpose is to raise money for scholarships given to worthy students seeking a post secondary education. In addition, the fund supports other educational and leadership activities designed to shape the minds and talents of our young people.

Leadership Development Institute: The LDI program prepares outstanding high school students in the vital skills of leadership, college preparation and effective group interaction.  Living on a college campus for four days under the direction of recognized community leaders, these young men participate in important leadership development activities.  During the Institute the student participants (known as Ambassadors) begin the training and grooming to assume the roles of leaders and productive citizens throughout their communities.  Most importantly they join a network of support that is available to assist them in reaching their goals and aspirations.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest: Held each January, The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. oratorical contest features 7th and 8th grade young men from the greater Newark community.

Johnson & Williams Science Awards: Awarded to two graduating seniors with a science major from Essex County College

The Marion B. Frederick Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate from an Essex County High School

While we have achieved a great deal since our local chapter was founded October 13, 1926, there is much more to do as we march onward and upward toward our goal. Let us move forward with passion, but also with purpose. And most of all, let us be mindful of the timeless mission of our Fraternity: Alpha Phi Alpha develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

The energy and passion of this campaign will firmly establish Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter as a leader in our community. By doing the work of Alpha and preparing our young men in particular for future uplift, our voice will be heard, our ideas will be shared, and the impact of our contributions to the greater Newark community will be further realized.

The Alpha Spirit can only grow and flourish because of the input of our membership. We are teachers and medical doctors, lawyers and accountants, professionals and dreamers, artists and entrepreneurs. Alpha men were carried here by ambition and courage, and they found success because they were faithful, scholarly, resourceful and skillful. We invite Brothers to become active, attend our monthly chapter meetings and share in the fellowship and brotherhood of our chapter and beloved Fraternity. Alpha Phi Alpha recognizes two types of membership, College and Alumni. A college graduate who earned a degree from a fully accredited four year college or university may be considered  for membership into an Alumni Chapter.

While the Brothers of Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter work hard, we also know how to celebrate success. The Evening of Elegance, held every two years, brings together Brothers and Friends of Alpha for our marquee formal event. We also enjoy regular fellowship, food and drink during chapter gatherings at local restaurants, private homes and related venues.

Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind are the aims of our dear Fraternity. We invite you to join us on this epic journey. We are the Alpha Men of the Brick City, we hope you will consider becoming an active participant in shaping a part Newark’s future and think about the positive impact you can make through supporting us. The future is ours to create. Let us write the most glorious Alpha history ever within Newark and beyond...
